USL Super League Launched Inaugural Season this Past Weekend
It is an exciting time for women’s soccer as the USL Super League made its official debut this past weekend. There are eight teams in the league’s first season. These are:
Brooklyn FC
Carolina Ascent FC
Dallas Trinity FC
DC Power FC
Fort Lauderdale United FC
Lexington SC
Spokane Zephyr FC
Tampa Bay Sun FC
The inaugural weekend started with three games.
On Saturday, August 17th, Carolina Ascent FC played DC Power FC. Hometown girl Vicky Bruce, of Carolina Ascent, scored the first ever goal in USL Super League history. Carolina Ascent won 1:0. Bruce is not only a Carolina Native, but she is a Three-Time Pro League Champion. She was the first signing for Carolina Ascent FC
Spokane Zephyr FC played Fort Lauderdale United FC. Addie McCaine, midfielder for Fort Lauderdale FC put the first goal on the board. This was followed by a goal by Spokane’s midfielder Emina Eric, resulting in a tied game of 1:1.
Tampa Bay Sun FC played Dallas Trinity FC on Sunday. This match also resulted in a tied game. Both teams have strong talent. Hannah Davison, a defense player, made a beautiful goal off of a perfect cross by former NWSL player Chioma Ubogagu. Brooke Hendrix saved the day for Tampa Bay Sun FC with a header that tied the game at 1:1.
Carolina Ascent FC kicks off the inaugural season in first place. No doubt there will be many more exciting games to follow.
Bringing Opportunities to US Women
US Soccer is hoping that this expansion into women’s soccer will demonstrate a commitment to fostering teams across multiple leagues. The hope is that this will improve opportunities for US women players. The league is planning to create a platform that will be sustainable while also providing players and clubs the support they need to grow.
The USL Super League has aligned its schedule with international soccer’s fall to spring calendar. Theoretically, this should assist in making trades between the US and international players more seamless.
The USL Super League is already being compared with women’s soccer leagues in Europe. For years, the premier European leagues such as France’s Division 1 Feminine in France, England’s Women’s Super League and Germany’s Frauen-bundesliga have been considered the leaders in women’s soccer. This, despite the US being known for having some of the strongest players. Previously, US women would go abroad in order to pursue their dreams of playing professionally. Now, they can do so at home.
